Can you tell us a little about your background and what you did before coming to Legacy Care Home?

Aishia:

When I was 19 I enrolled at Olive Harvey College to get my CNA, but the timing wasn’t quite right. I withdrew after learning  I was pregnant and started working with teens in a transitional home. This became a passion of mine for over 35 years. I moved to Minnesota in 2007 and started working with clients with drug addictions and helping homeless individuals get housed. I eventually went back to school and received my Associate Degree in Human Services.

So, why did you choose to work at Legacy Care Home? Nursing assistants are in great demand. Why LCH?

Aishia:

When Covid-19 hit, I saw my family getting sick. My dad was hospitalized for a month. Watching the news and seeing the doctors and nurses working 24 hours a day trying to save lives, on top of other health issues patients may have, made me want to jump back into the field and help. Our older generation needed more people like me to step in and help the overwhelmed doctors and nurses. This brought me to Legacy Care Homes. Jason and his family, along with the residents, quickly made me feel like family. This is when I realized that this kind of caregiving is my passion. It was time to go back and get my CNA.

What do you enjoy most about your day to day work at Legacy?

Aishia:

My day to day work at Legacy is a joy. To come in and see residents’ smiles when they see me coming into their room — you know they trust you with their lives. You get to see their interaction with one another doing activities and you notice how comfortably they communicate with you. They have their own personalities and sense of humor. It warms your heart and often gives you a good laugh! It just makes me want to “love on them” more. When they're in pain, it deepens your sense of compassion and empathy. You want to help them deal with whatever they may be going through in the moment. When residents feel sad because I’m leaving for the day, it gives me even more motivation to get up and be at work to help brighten their day.

What do you like to do in your free time? How do you spend your time when you are not working?

Aishia:

In my free time, I like hanging out with my husband, family, and friends. We get together and have big dinners — and we enjoy activities, like karaoke night. I love my family. We all are very close and our time together is something we all look forward to.

How long have you been at Legacy?

Aishia:

I started here at Legacy October 2nd 2023 — so about 11 months. I can’t wait to reach my one year anniversary!

What is something people might not know about you?

Aishia:

What people don’t know about me is that I’m 47 but look 27! I have four kids. My son Brandon is 29 and he’s an attorney. My daughter Kenisha Bell is 28 and plays professional basketball. She also does some work here at Legacy when she’s not in basketball season. My son Darius is 27 and he works in my old field with behaviorally challenged kids. My son Romelle is 19 and also works here at Legacy when he has time from school and basketball. I have a granddaughter who will be 5 years old in October — actually on October 11, my mom’s birthday. She was the best gift my mom said she could have, and she enjoys sharing it with her first granddaughter. It will be two years on October 1st that I married my best friend. I now have 25 “bonus kids” and 18 “bonus grandkids.” So, I have a BIG family and I love them all!
